Safety Tips To Consider When Using A Taxi Service
ShareRiding in a cab is generally a safe and eventful experience. But there are hidden dangers and concerns that could pop up at any time. While you may take for granted the ability to jump in a taxi to get across town to your next destination, there are some safety risks to keep in mind. Here are some tips on ways to be vigilant the next time you hail a taxi cab.
Look For Identifying Factors On The Outside Of The Taxi Cab
The biggest thing you can do to stay safe before getting into a cab is identifying the vehicle properly. Look for a company logo on the outside of the cab first. Does it appear to have permanent lettering? Or is it a magnet that is holding a generic sign up? A reputable company will have the following listed on the outside of their taxi cab:
- A metal medallion on the outside of the vehicle that shows it's registered with the city or state
- A lighted sign at the top of the vehicle that shows if the cab is available or on-duty
- Clear and visible cab identification numbers generally found on the top of the vehicle but can be on the sides or hood
Getting into a taxi or vehicle that is not registered with the city or state can be dangerous. Call the number on the side of the taxi for a main dispatch office if you feel uncertain. Ask them to verify the cab number and present location.
Look For Cab Equipment
When you get inside of a cab, there should be some relevant signs that the company is legitimate. There should be an identification badge visible to you that matches the driver's name and physical description. Ask to look closer at it if you feel your safety may be at risk. A radio should also be visible that alerts the driver of his next stop. A running meter shows that the taxi company is charging you per mile. If any of these items are not visible at first glance, you may not be in a legitimate taxi cab and you should exit immediately.
Be Clear To The Taxi Cab Driver About Your Drop-off Point
Tell the cab driver exactly where you want to be dropped off at. Don't say between two streets or blocks, this could lead to accidentally letting you out at an unsafe location. Make sure this is understood before leaving with the driver.
Call Ahead Rather Than Hailing A Cab Down
If you're in an unfamiliar city or country, call and arrange for taxi services before hailing one down on the street. This will ensure that you are being picked up by a company you know is there to perform their services safely and effectively.
Many crimes including kidnapping, sexual assault and physical battery happen in taxi cabs and when exiting a cab. Staying safe while you travel means being informed and vigilant at all times so you can arrive safely to your destination
